How to Find Niche Ideas With the Best Chance of Success [S1E01]

To build a website business the first thing we need to do is find niche ideas.

While researching we have to keep in mind our end goal, and that’s the creation of our own products or services.

Don’t get scared by the phrase “own product“, this is just an end goal and it’s optional. You don’t even have to go past Google Adsense monetization.

I personally always go for products so the end goal of this guide will be to create own products.

How to find niche ideas? It’s the first lesson I teach you in my free Zero’$ Biz. Course. Learn how to find the most profitable niches!

Will we use any paid tools?

Only one paid tool is required. It’s Long Tail Pro and I am using it to find all my great niche ideas for quite some time.

Find Niche Ideas With LongTailPro
Find Niche Ideas With Long Tail Pro

The most important feature it has is Keyword Competitiveness (Avg. KC).

This number gives us an idea of how hard it is to rank keyword on the first page of Google Search.

Get the tool here: Long Tail Pro (7 days trial for $1)

(disclaimer if you get it through this link I will get small affiliate fee)

If you don’t want me to get a small affiliate fee here is the plain link: LTP.

To be honest, we could do niche research using only free niche finders, although it wouldn’t be as convenient. But for the next episode How to Use LongTail Pro for the Best SEO & SEM Keyword Research? [S1E02], Long Tail Pro is an absolute must.

So I won’t even try to explain the process of researching a niche without this tool.

Note: Finding a niche and keyword research are steps that make or break your website business.

Download my FREE workbook spreadsheet

Ok before we start if you didn’t already download a copy of my spreadsheet: Zero’$ Biz. Course – Workbook

Do it now!

I will use this Excel spreadsheet through this episode and through the complete course and you will have to do the same.

Now when we have the spreadsheet in front of us let’s continue.

Open the sheet S1E01 – Find Niche Ideas.

Why do we look at Amazon best sellers?

We want to pick a niche where a lot of products exist and a lot of products sell each month, meaning the most profitable niches. This has multiple benefits for our website.

1. There is a good number of advertisers in the niche. So there will be many Google Ads with a decent CPC rate. (CPC means cost per click, it means the price advertisers are paying for each click)

2. When we get to step of adding affiliate products to our website we will have lots of products to choose from.

3. When we get to step of creating our own products we will know what products to create. Because we know that Amazon already sells a lot of similar products.

Let’s start filling our workbook

1. Amazon Department

Find Niche Ideas - Step 1 - Pick 10 Departments from Amazon Best Sellers
Pick 10 Departments from Amazon Best Sellers

Here we want to pick 10 departments from  Amazon best sellers list. Choose departments that you love or are interested in it.

Because in later steps we will either have to write about that topic or acquire articles. Even if we acquire/buy articles we still need to be familiar with the topic because we will have to edit articles and evaluate how good they are. And if we don’t know anything about the topic we won’t be able to do that.

If you plan to personally write articles then you need to be even more familiar with the topic.

Step 1: Open this URL: https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers/zgbs/

Pick 10 departments you like and are familiar with.

Here are my picks:

1. Arts, Crafts & Sewing

2. Beauty & Personal Care

3. Books

4. Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry

5. Health & Household

6. Kitchen & Dining

7. Office Products

8. Pet Supplies

9. Sports & Outdoors

10. Toys & Games

2. Volume

Here we want to get a rough estimate of how many searches per month this department gets.

Step 2: Use Long TailPro to find out the number.

First click plus symbol to add the project.

Find Niche Ideas - Step 2 - a Add New Project
Add New Project

Then select “Manual Keyword Entry” and add departments separated by a comma.

If the department contains multiple product groups like” Arts, Crafts & Sewing” enter every keyword separately.

Find Niche Ideas - Step 2 - b Add Amazon Departments That You Picked
Add Amazon Departments That You Picked

And then sum up monthly searches of every keyword to get department monthly searches. It doesn’t have to be exact number. We just need rough estimate how big the niche would be.

3. Social Opportunities

Here we want to find, are products from our desired departments present on social networks? Particularly on Youtube, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook.

Step 3: Search those social networks.

Enter your estimate how good is the product presence on social networks. If there is no social presence enter 1. If there is high social presence enter 10. So your estimates will range from 1 to 10.

Here’s how I do it for “Beauty & Personal Care”. First, let’s check Youtube.

Find Niche Ideas - Step 3 - Check Youtube
Check Youtube

On first sight, I see there are guides, tips, hacks. So there is strong Youtube presence of videos in the beauty niche.

Let’s now check Instagram.

Find Niche Ideas - Step 3 - Check Instagram
Check Instagram

There are beautiful images with beautiful girls and with products to enhance the beauty. There is a huge presence of beauty niche in social media.

Also based on my experience and gut feeling I would definitely put 10 in this field. There is a huge social opportunity in the beauty niche.

Find Niche Ideas - Step 3 - Research and Fill Estimates for Your Departments
Research and Fill Estimates for Your Departments

Fill out this column for your all departments. Make your own research and make your own estimates. Again this won’t be an exact number but more like your feelings.

4. Potential to Add Value

Here we want to see can we add value to the topic.

Can we help people with how-to-guides, tutorials, reviews, comparisons, etc…

Also, we need to see can we do this better than competition or at least as good as they are doing it.

Again it will be more like estimates and our gut feelings.

To help us with research we will use Google Search, Similar Web, and BuzzSumo.

Step 4: Make Google Search.

Here is my result for “Beauty Products”. I didn’t get any good results for “beauty” so I tried “beauty products”.

Find Niche Ideas - Step 4 - Google Search
Google Search

As we can see leaders are sephora.com, allure.com, bestproducts.com, dermstore.com etc…

You can open each website and see can you beat them or make a similar job as they are doing.

After that open Similar Web and try to find even more competitors you can research. Look for “Also visited websites” and “Competitors & Similar Sites”.

Find Niche Ideas - Step 4 - Similar Web
Similar Web

After you check those websites check BuzzSumo for most shared content.

BuzzSumo Most Shared Content

Research those pages and see if you could do better or similar job.

Based on our research we need to make a decision now. Can we add more value to the “Beauty” niche?

I personally would say this niche is very competitive and content that already exists is really good. So I will put 4 in this cell.

Here are all my estimates.

5. Paid Marketing Opportunities

Here we want to see are there any paid ads related to our niche.

We will check the Facebook ads and Google ads. Also, we will check CPC or how much our competitors pay for ads.

Step 5: First let’s see are there any Facebook ads for our beauty niche.

To do so we will use AdEspresso free online tool. Just type keyword, choose a category and click “Find Ads Now”.

Here are my results.

Find Niche Ideas - Step 5 - AdEspresso Facebook Ads
AdEspresso Facebook Ads

We can see that there are video ads, image ads and product ads in the first 3 results. Conclusion, there are probably many ads in the beauty niche.

Next, let’s make Google Search and see are there any ads. Here are my results.

Find Niche Ideas - Step 5 - Google Search Ads
Google Search Ads

I searched “beauty products”. There are a bunch of ads.

Now we need to see how expensive advertising is. We will use a free chrome addon Keywords Everywhere. Here it is.

Find Niche Ideas - Step 5 - Keywords Everywhere Keyword Tool
Keywords Everywhere Keyword Tool

After you add it to your chrome browser, let’s search google again. You will instantly see suggestions and related keywords. Pay close attention to the CPC (cost-per-click) column. You want to see how expensive those keywords are.

Less than $1 is affordable. More than $10 is expensive.

Find Niche Ideas - Step 5 - Keywords Everywhere in Use
Keywords Everywhere in Use

So for beauty niche, my conclusion is that advertising will be pretty expensive but there are lots of opportunities because there are many advertisers, so ads probably work very well.

I will type in 8.

Here is my full Paid Marketing Opportunities column.

6. Number of Accessories

Here we want to see how many products exist in our niche.

Will we be able to offer a wide assortment of products to our audience in later stages of website business?

Step 6: Just check Amazon best sellers again and explore how many products there are in every department.

You should also check subcategories. Then make your estimate and enter a number from 1-10, where 10 means plenty of accessories.

Here are my estimates.

7. $50-$200 Price Point

Here we want to see are there any products between $50 to $200 price point. Because those products usually sell the most.

Step 7: Just check Amazon best sellers again and explore prices in every department.

Then make your estimate and enter a number from 1-10, where 10 means plenty of products in $50 to $200 price range.

Here are my estimates.

8. Product Size

Here we want to see how big the product is. Because larger products are expensive to ship. So we want small to medium sized items.

Step 8: Just check Amazon best sellers again and explore product sizes in every department.

Then make your estimate and enter a number from 1-10, where 10 means plenty of small to medium size products.

Here are my subjective estimates.

9. Increasing Market Demand

Here we want to see if demand is growing or dropping. Obviously, we want growing demand.

Step 9: To make this estimates we will use Google Trends.

Open Google Trends and enter Amazon department. Then click search. I personally always pick “2004-present” for the time range. Here is the result for “beauty”.

Find Niche Ideas - Step 9 - Google Trends
Google Trends

As we can see demand is constantly growing. There was a boom in 2017’s but now demand is stable.

I would give it like 7. There are for sure some faster-growing departments.

Here are my other estimates.

10. Consumable

Here we want to see are the products consumable? If they are we will be able to sell products repetitively to our regular customers.

Step 10: Just check Amazon best sellers again and explore products in every department.

Then make your own judgment how many consumable products there are. Enter a number from 1-10, where 10 means plenty of consumable products.

Here are my subjective estimates.

Consumable Products
Consumable Products

Lastly, let’s fill the second table

As you can see in the spreadsheet department names are filled automatically (yellow highlight) with 5 departments that have the best potential.

Now we need to fill column under department name with product names. To do that open Amazon best sellers again.

Then open department, and start writing down all the products. Go through all the pages and find as many products as you can.

Find Niche Ideas - Pick Products
Pick Products

I highlighted products with red color so you can see what to look for.

Don’t pick brand and unique names. Just the product categories or product purpose.

Here is how I did it for “Beauty & Personal Care“.

Then we need to use Long Tail Pro to find out “Rank Value” for each product.

To do that create the new project in Long Tail Pro. Select manual keyword entry and copy all products from spreadsheet to Long Tail Pro.

Here is an example.

And then fill Rank Value in the spreadsheet with data you get from Long Tail Pro.

Here are my results.
